03 - Klingspor type foundry

Beschreibung

Historical illustration of the Klingspor type foundry

In 1892, the brothers Karl and Wilhelm Klingspor took over the long-established Rudhard type foundry. As early as 1897, the company moved into new buildings on Ludwigstrasse inside the block. Today, the building stock includes factory buildings from around 1900 and the years of reconstruction after the Second World War, which were unified through renovations. Through Karl Klingspor, one of the co-founders of the Deutscher Werkbund in 1907, the type foundry Gebr. Klingspor became one of the leading suppliers of modern typefaces and promoters of artistic book and printed matter design in Germany.

Art Nouveau artists such as Otto Eckmann and Peter Behrens, Walter Thiemann and above all the type designer Rudolf Koch worked together with Klingspor. For decades, the company's image was characterized by quality awareness and "workmanship" in the spirit of the Deutscher Werkbund.

In 1956, the graphic design company was taken over by the Frankfurt company Stempel. The surviving estate of the company and Karl Klingspor's book collection formed the basis of the Klingspor Museum at Herrnstraße 37 in 1953.
