04 - Hatry cigarette factory
Beschreibung
The relocation of the gasworks to the port in 1911 freed up space for the construction of a new cigarette factory (Crevetti brand) , which was then called Hatry, also known as Lypstadt & Co and later Borg. The company produced around 200 million cigarettes a year for the domestic and export markets, mainly by a female workforce.
Despite its large windows, the façade design of the five-storey building blends in with the apartment buildings in the neighborhood that were built at the same time. A small round gable, originally decorated with baroque elements, sets a structural accent to the street intersection.
After production ceased around 1928, the building was converted into a residential building. Since 1937, the building has also housed a pharmacy, whose New Objectivity-style interior is still in use.
