City of Offenbach

25- Büsingpalais

Beschreibung

Around 1775/80, the Bernard and d'Orville families, owners of the snuff factory founded in 1733, had a new residential and commercial building built: today's Büsingpalais.
In addition to the palatial main building with its large garden, there were storage rooms and part of the factory to the side of the large courtyard, with other factory buildings in the vicinity. The house experienced its heyday at the end of the 18th century. Peter Bernard used a considerable part of his company profits to maintain an orchestra with which he played music.
After the construction of the Bernard Building in 1896/97 made the workrooms in the old building redundant, the then owner Adolph Freiherr von Büsing-Orville had the building rebuilt in the neo-Rococo style.

In 1923, he relocated the headquarters of the Bernard brothers' snuff factory to the Regensburg branch, which had already existed since 1812.
The city was able to acquire the property from him as early as 1920, opening the park to the public and using the building as a town hall until it was destroyed in the war in 1943. The central building remained a ruin until 1984. The side wings were renovated in 1953 for the city library and the Klingspor Museum. It was not until 2011 that the roof truss of the Klingspor Museum, which had been destroyed in the Second World War, was reconstructed with donations from the public.
