Beschreibung
A railroad line connecting the port of Offenbach with the Frankfurt-Bebra railroad line along the banks of the Main was already taken into account when the port was planned. The Oehler chemical factory in particular had long demanded its own rail connection and finally received it in 1898/99. With the opening of the port in 1902, the port railroad was also put into operation. A new goods station was built in 1914-19 as part of the upgrading of the Frankfurt-Bebra railroad and the reorganization of the railroad area. The Ostbahnhof was the starting point of the industrial railroad, which also supplied the large factories on Waldstraße and Sprendlinger Landstraße with raw materials and goods from the port via railroad tracks.
A section of the former harbor railroad, the "Kulturgleis" with a goods wagon that is used for cultural events, is still a reminder of the former harbor railroad. At the eastern end, the track spirals skywards as a work of art in the form of a helix.
The Kulturgleis also marks the location of the city's Mainkai, which served as a landing stage for ships before the port was built.
