28 - Metallwaren- und Kassenschrankfabrik Karl Steinert

Description

Founded in 1885, the building and locksmith's workshop developed into a small factory for cash register cabinets by the end of the 19th century. In 1896, Steinert began building the rear building, the large workshop on the first floor and the apartments there, as well as a multi-storey front building. Bourgeois representation and the world of work formed two separate spheres. This is also reflected in the architecture: the façade of the front building in the late historicist style blends in with the streetscape thanks to its structure and architectural decoration, while the rear and rear building façades are purely functional buildings with no aesthetic appeal. The so-called "Omnibus", a low living space above the passageway into the rear courtyard, is an example of the economical use of space
In 1906, the sons took over the business, which was later divided and relocated. Karl Steinert devoted himself to local politics until his death in 1919.
