Beschreibung

Aerial view of the company premises 2005

The chemical factory set up by Dr. Ernst Sell in 1842 distilled tar and was the first independent manufacturer of asphalt products in Germany.

In 1850, Karl Oehler bought the company, expanded the production of aniline-based dyes and, from 1860, produced fuchsine and various shades of blue as synthetic dyes. In 1905, Dr. Eugen Oehler sold the factory to the Griesheim-Elektron company, which further expanded research and production and developed the insoluble dye "Naphtol AS" in 1912.

Economic problems in the interwar period, but above all the incorporation into the IG Farben Group in 1925, led to a decline in production. From 1933, the demand for dyes increased and led to a surge in expansion and modernization at the Offenbach plant.

After the Second World War and the dismantling of IG Farben, the now independent Naphtol-Chemie restored the war-damaged production facilities. In 1953, the company was taken over by Farbwerke Hoechst, which expanded the site for Trevira production from 1961.

After several name changes, chemical production at the Offenbach site was discontinued in 2010. Almost all of the factory buildings have since been demolished. A few listed buildings, such as the administration building, are to be incorporated into the planned new development of the industrial estate.
