City of Offenbach

37 - Roland factory estate

Description

Between 1953 and 1961, Faber und Schleicher's own construction company (later MAN-Roland-Druckmaschinen AG, see no. 16) built almost 400 apartments for employees of the engineering company in Richard-Wagner-Straße. Still located on the outskirts of the city at the time, the urban planning concept corresponded to the "structured and loosened-up city" that had been pioneering modern urban planning since the end of the war. An estate of apartment buildings was built in a loose row in a spacious green area characterized by large lawns. The modern architecture of the first houses is enlivened by murals in a colorful sgraffito technique by the well-known Offenbach painter Adolf Bode (1904-1970), which refer to the company's global business activities. The company apartments document the economic upswing of the post-war years and the company's commitment to creating living space.
