The German Meteorological Service (DWD) is responsible for meeting the meteorological requirements of all economic and social sectors in Germany.

Tasks include

• Provision of meteorological and climatological services
• Meteorological safety for aviation
  The aviation meteorological service isSES-certified and is involved in the worldwide safety and meteorological support of civil aviation.
• Meteorological protection of shipping
  TheDWD is involved in the worldwide safety and support of maritime shipping through theUNIMO Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea(SOLAS).
• Meteorological safety of traffic routes and important infrastructures - especially energy supply and communication systems
• Issuing official warnings about weather phenomena
