Local court

Overview

Local courts provide citizens and courts with important assistance and help to save costs. As auxiliary authorities of the judiciary, they are partners for many personal matters.

In Hesse, there is at least one local court for each municipality.

Each local court has at least five members: the head of the local court and four local court lay judges. Local court members are honorary civil servants who are appointed by the president or director of the relevant local court on the recommendation of the municipality.

The duties of the local courts include

  • Certifying signatures and copies of public or private deeds;
  • Securing estates;
  • drawing up inventories of estates;
  • Issuing death notifications;
  • Valuation of real estate, movable property and the like at the request of an interested party or at the request of an authority;
  • Assistance in the determination of property boundaries.
