City of Offenbach

Office of Local Agenda 21

Overview

Agenda 21 is an action program for the 21st century. Local Agenda 21 has its roots in the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, which was attended by 178 countries around the world. In Offenbach, Local Agenda 21 Offenbach am Main was established by a resolution of the city council on July 17, 1997. The kick-off event took place at the beginning of 1998 under the motto "We are making Offenbach fit for the future".

We are an association of politically interested citizens who are not bound by party politics.
We want to exert socio-political influence in the following areas: Environment, social affairs and economy with a focus on "sustainability".
We want to bring about long-term and lasting changes in the socio-political arena.
We see ourselves as a mediator between the party-political groups.
We see ourselves as representatives of all citizens.

As criteria for the focus on "sustainability", Agenda 21 primarily comprises 4 dimensions:

  • ecological sustainability,
  • economic sustainability
  • social justice and equality,
  • Securing the future, taking into account the needs of future generations.

The idea of Local Agenda 21 is based on the realization that local actions and activities have repercussions on global actions and global development due to general networking. This applies to areas of the environment just as much as to areas of the economy or the social fabric.

Anyone can contribute to and get involved in Local Agenda 21 Offenbach am Main. The internal structure is largely open and has no hierarchical levels.

The Agenda Office is the central point of contact for communication within Local Agenda 21 as well as the central "service provider" for stakeholders, i.e. the interface between citizens, administration, politics and cooperation partners from all areas.
