Enamel hardening - local fluoridation of teeth to prevent tooth decay in schools and kindergartens
Local fluoridation of teeth with a varnish containing flouride is offered in elementary school, special schools and selected kindergartens in accordance with § 21 SGB V to protect against tooth decay.
Overview
A high fluoride content in the superficial layer of the tooth enamel reduces acid solubility (decalcification) and promotes remineralization (re-deposition of calcium) in the smallest existing defects.
If the parents give their written consent for their child to take part in this measure, it is carried out every six months during the entire kindergarten and (primary) school years or until further notice.
Parents are informed in advance about the respective fluoridation date and the corresponding rules of conduct on that day.
This fluoridation as part of group dental prophylaxis is not intended to replace individual prophylaxis at the family dentist, but to supplement it.
