Exemption from school sports

Health impairments can lead to restrictions in school sports, be it that certain exercises cannot be performed or general participation is impossible.

Pupils who are unable to take part in sports lessons due to a long-term illness or other health handicap require a medical certificate. If the certificate exceeds a period of three months, the school or university can request a medical certificate from a public health officer.

An exemption requires a specific justification, as school sports are part of compulsory education.

Please bring the following documents with you to your appointment:

• An official photo ID (e.g. identity card or passport)
• A medical certificate from a specialist with a diagnosis and details of which sports may and may not be practiced. The certificate must not be older than six months.
• Copy of existing medical documents, such as medical findings, certificates, treatment reports or expert opinions

The assessment is free of charge for pupils who are required to attend school.

After the end of compulsory schooling, the examination is subject to a fee and is carried out on the basis of

• §19 of the Hessian Law on the Public Health Service (HGöGD)
• the Hessian Administrative Costs Act (HVwKostG)
• the Administrative Cost Regulations for the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs and Integration (VwKostO-HSMI)

The assessment is carried out on the basis of the relevant laws:

The assessment can be carried out either by means of an examination at the public health department or on the basis of the available files. A personal examination will only be carried out after the corresponding preliminary medical examination findings have been submitted.

Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
