Residence for qualified tolerated persons for the purpose of employment
Foreign nationals who, as former “tolerated” persons, have been granted a residence permit to work may apply to extend their temporary residence permit.
Overview
You can apply to extend your residence permit for qualified tolerated persons issued for the purpose of employment if you wish to continue working and also continue to meet the other requirements. In principle, the same requirements must be met for the extension of the residence permit as for the initial issue. In particular, you must be able to cover your living expenses and health insurance from your own resources without claiming public benefits.
In order to process your application, the Foreigners' Registration Office usually involves the Federal Employment Agency, which will check the working conditions. After holding the residence permit for two years and if you have been employed during this time in a job that corresponds to your professional qualifications, access to the labor market is no longer subject to any restrictions.
If your residence permit is extended, it will be limited in time again. As a rule, the residence permit cannot be extended if this was already ruled out when the residence permit was issued or last extended.
