Applying for a residence permit for the purpose of training

Foreign nationals from non-EU and non-EEA countries need a residence permit for educational purposes to pursue vocational training in Germany. You can obtain this permit for the following training programs:

• Participation in language courses that do not prepare students for university studies (intensive German language course)
• in exceptional cases, to attend school
• for vocational training and continuing education programs, subject to approval by the Federal Employment Agency

To study at a public or state-recognized university or comparable educational institution in Germany, you need a “residence permit for students.”

Note: Citizens of EU member states may complete vocational training in Germany based on their right to free movement. They must provide proof of adequate health insurance coverage and sufficient means of support if they are not employed. This also applies to other nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA) as well as to Swiss nationals.

The residence permit for the purpose of education is temporary and valid only for this specific purpose. If the purpose of your stay changes, you must report this to the responsible authority immediately. You must apply for an extension of your residence permit well in advance of its expiration date.

Please note: If you are residing in Germany for educational purposes, you cannot obtain a settlement permit.

• Proof of Compliance with Passport and Visa Requirements

• Proof that there are no grounds for your deportation
• Proof that you do not endanger or harm the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany
• Proof of meeting the admission requirements for the training program (original document)
