Residence permit for general school attendance

As a general rule, you can only obtain a residence permit to attend a general education school starting in the 9th grade. In exceptional cases, the residence permit may also be granted for attendance in a lower grade level.

The residence permit for attending a general education school is a temporary residence permit. It is issued for the duration of school attendance.

During the stay for school attendance, a change in the purpose of stay is generally only possible if the individual is eligible for another residence permit.

• Valid passport
• Current biometric photo
• Visa, if required
• Proof of financial support (e.g., a blocked bank account, a statement from the parents confirming they will provide financial support for the duration of the student’s schooling, including proof of income, or a letter of financial commitment from a third party)
• Proof of health insurance
• Proof of enrollment in school in Germany (e.g., by submitting a certificate from the school to be attended)
• If you are under 18 years of age—consent from the person(s) with legal custody for the planned stay in Germany.

Issuing a residence permit: EUR 100.00

Under certain conditions, a fee reduction or fee exemption may be possible.

• You should apply for a residence permit no later than eight weeks before your current visa expires.
• The residence permit is issued for a limited period. Its validity depends on the duration of your enrollment in school.
• Appeal period: 1 month
