Residence permit for the purpose of au pair employment (non-EU)
Overview
Au pairs from most countries outside the EU or EEA require an au pair visa to enter Germany.
Nationals of the following countries can enter Germany without a visa. You must apply for a residence permit within 3 months of entering the country:
- Australia
- Israel
- Japan
- Canada
- New Zealand
- Republic of Korea
- United States of America
Tip:Despite the existing visa exemption, it may be advisable to enter the country with a visa for au pair employment. You should therefore enquire at the German diplomatic mission in your home country.
The residence permit for au pair employment is valid for
- working in the host family's household and
- childcare.
Care activities (e.g. nursing or care of the elderly) are not permitted.
The residence permit is valid for a maximum of one year. You cannot have it extended for the same purpose.
Please note:You may only work as an au pair once you have received the residence permit for au pair employment. The regulations for foreign workers are very strict. If you violate them, this may have consequences under residence law.
