Foreign driving license (not EU/EEA): rewrite

Holders of a valid foreign driving license may drive motor vehicles in Germany after taking up residence in Germany to the extent of their entitlement for as long as the foreign driving license is valid, but for no longer than a further 6 months. If a motor vehicle is to continue to be driven in Germany after this period, a German driving license must be issued on the basis of the foreign driving license (so-called transfer).

• Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g., ID card, passport)

The amount of the fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures.

The transfer must be applied for as long as the foreign driving license is still valid.

The transfer of a new driving license acquired abroad after taking up residence in Germany is not permitted.
