Driving license - extension

Do you already hold a driver's license and would like to add another license (class) to it?

In general, the provisions governing the initial issuance of a driver’s license apply to license extensions

Exceptions apply to:

• the upgrade from Class A1 to Class A2 and the upgrade from Class A2 to Class A:
  If you have held Class A1 or Class A2 for two years, you only need to take a practical test in each case (upgrade).
• Upgrading from Class B to Class BE, from Class C1 to Class C1E, from Class D to Class DE, and from Class D1 to Class D1E:
  In each of these cases, you need to take only one practical test.

• Identification card or passport; certificate of residence, if applicable
• Current driver's license
• A current biometric-compliant photo in accordance with the Passport Regulation (PassV) (size 45x35mm, portrait orientation, full-face view)
• Proof of completion of a first aid training course
• Proof of visual acuity

• You must appear in person !
• You can have your biometric photo and signature taken directly at our terminals in the Citizens' Office. Please arrive in good time before your appointment (at least 15 minutes beforehand); the terminals with multilingual user interface are located in the waiting area.
  The usage fee is €3.40 and is charged together with the driving license fees.
• Name of the driving school
• Address of the TÜV, if applicable
• If applicable, a copy of the file card from the previous driving license authority

For categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE:

• For commercial use, professional driver qualification if applicable

A confirmation of registration is not required.

The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
