Vehicle registration: Vehicle with foreign license plate / import

Important note:
If an operating license / individual approval is required for your technical modification or import, please go to the "Issue operating license" tab in our appointment system and follow the steps there.
The type approval must be issued before your actual registration date.

• Current identity card or passport
• SEPA mandate with account details (IBAN and BIC) for the collection of vehicle tax
• For companies: additionally
• Business registration or extract from the commercial register
• for representation with written power of attorney: additional identity card or passport of the authorized representative
  The power of attorney must also contain a declaration of consent to the effect that the registration authority may inform the authorized representative of any existing arrears of vehicle tax as well as fees and expenses.

• Electronic insurance confirmation (eVB)
• if the vehicle is still registered abroad
  the foreign registration documents and license plates
• if the vehicle was registered abroad but was deregistered in Germany before importation
  the foreign registration documents
• if applicable: confirmation of reservation for the desired license plate number
• Proof of ownership: purchase contract or original invoice
• VAT declaration, if applicable
  Vehicles that were first registered in another EU member state no more than 6 months ago and whose mileage to date is less than 6,000 km are considered new vehicles for tax purposes.
  • if the registration authority cannot determine the date for the next main inspection and exhaust emissions test from the foreign registration documents:
    additional proof that a main inspection has been carried out

• if the vehicle was imported from countries outside the EU (applies to both new and used vehicles): additionally
  • Clearance certificate from the customs office (available at the border)
  • for vehicles with EC type approval: Inspection report on general inspection and test certificate on exhaust emission test
  • for vehicles without EC type approval: Certificate from an officially recognized expert according to § 21 StVZO (full certificate)
