Vehicle registration: First registration of a vehicle Issue

If you want to use a new motor vehicle on the road for the first time, it must be registered. This also applies to trailers. You or your representative submit the application for this initial registration to the local vehicle registration authority.

After successful registration, you will receive the registration documents and the registration authority will assign you a license plate number.

The registration entitles you to

• drive the vehicle on the road and
• park the vehicle in public areas.

So-called owner data is recorded during the registration process.

• for natural persons:
• Surname, maiden name, first names,
  • if applicable, religious or stage name,
  • Date and place of birth or, if this is not known, the country of birth,
  • gender and address
• for legal persons and authorities:
  • Name or designation and
  • address
• for associations:
  • Representation with data according to natural or legal persons
  • Name of the association

• Valid identity card or passport of the vehicle owner;
• Registration certificate part I or vehicle registration document
• Registration certificate Part II or vehicle registration document or, in the case of vehicles that do not require registration but are subject to registration, the certificate of operating license (not required for license plate transfer)
• If the due date of the next general inspection (HU) is not shown on the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document), also the test report of the last HU
• Official license plates for registered vehicles, if you do not wish to keep them (not required for license plate transfer)
• Electronic insurance confirmation (eVB) for motor vehicle liability insurance (not required for license plate transfer)
• Confirmation of reservation for the desired license plate number, if applicable

If applicable, the following must also be submitted

• if you are represented by a third party (e.g. registration service):
  Your written power of attorney and your identity document (original); the authorized representative himself must be able to identify himself with his valid identity card/passport.
• If you are registering a minor:
  the written declaration of consent of the legal guardians and their identity documents (in the original); if applicable, a certificate of sole custody (so-called "negative certificate") for single parents
• for legal entities (GmbH, AG etc.) and partnerships (OHG):
  the business registration and, if applicable, an excerpt from the commercial register as well as the power of attorney of the managing director and his/her identity card (original) or the personal appearance of the managing director
• especially for civil law partnerships (GbR):
  a complete overview of the partners (usually the partnership agreement) as well as a power of attorney of the persons authorized to sign according to the agreement and their identity cards (in the original); the power of attorney must contain a declaration as to which natural person the registration is to be made in the name of
• especially for associations:
  an excerpt from the register of associations as well as the power of attorney of the designated representative (or representatives) and his/her identity card (or their identity cards) (in the original)

• Account details (IBAN and BIC) for the collection of all vehicle taxes due

• Administration fee: Payment by EC-Cash (with PIN)

There is no deadline.
