Winter service / duty to clear and grit

Winter road maintenance is the maintenance of traffic safety on roads, squares and paths in the event of obstructions caused by snow or ice. The winter road clearance service must ensure that roads and footpaths remain safe to drive or walk on in icy and snowy conditions by gritting and clearing.

The duty to clear and grit is the responsibility of the property owner or, in the case of public roads, the road construction authority. The road construction authority must do its best to ensure that the road can be walked on or driven on.

In general, towns and municipalities require road owners to clear snow from the sidewalks in front of their properties and to grit them in icy conditions.
